Finland and Estonia has agreed to build two LNG terminals together. The two facilities which are connected by a pipe crossing through Gulf of Finland are expected to help two countries reduce dependence on Russian gas.
At present, all of gas in Finland and Estonia come from Russia. The two countries have already negotiated for connecting two gas markets for over three years. Recently, Russian radical diplomatic policy enhances two countries’ anxiety. Both two Baltic countries fear that Russia may use gas as a tool to rebuild its regional influence in the region.
In the later of Monday, in published news release, Finnish pointed out that new plan would build a large-scale LNG terminal to supply gas to Finland, while another LNG terminal with a smaller scale would transmit gas to Estonia, and a pipe would connect two gas markets. For divergence on scale of two terminals, two countries had ever laid aside the program for the moment. Either Finland or Estonia hopes their own terminal would be larger.
Taavi Rõivas, the Prime Minister of Estonia said, newly-reached agreement would make Estonia reduce dependence on Russian gas by a large margin. However, the program is suffering from criticism. It is considered that a small scale LNG terminal cannot accord with Estonian benefits.
Alexander Stubb, Finnish Prime Minister said that the agreement would enhance two countries’ energy security which was based on gas.
