It is reported that Libyan gas supply to Italia has already reached the highest level since 11 months, because Ukraine threaten to break off transportation that supplies Russian gas to Europe. Russian gas almost meets one third of demands in every country in South Europe.

The data of Snam Tete Gas, a gas network operator in Italia show that gas which is exported from Libya to Italia increased to 5.73 hundred million cubic meters (20 billion cubic feet) in July, the highest level since August in 2013, accounting for 15% of total gas consumption in Italia. In July, gas imported by Italian shipping and pipeline was still 14% which was lower than the same period of 2010 (After then, Gaddafi, the former Libyan President was expelled and Libya stopped exporting gas.).

On last Thursday (August 14), Ukraine passed an act to allowed government to sanction Russia, which increasing the risks that suspended supplying gas to Europe. The data of Energy Aspects, an energy industry consultancy show that the average Italian gas consumption ranges from 9 billion cubic meters to 10 billion cubic meters in winter. Russia is estimated to supply about 2 billion to 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas.

On August 13, Moses Rahnama, the analyst of Energy Aspects wrote E-mail, “It is impossible Libyan gas supply to Italia to reach the level in 2010 in the short term. As a result, Italia will continue to depending on Russia supplying gas through Ukraine. For the current inventory, cutting off Russian gas supply means that Italia have to compete with Norway and Netherlands.

Gas Infrastructure Europe claims that Italian gas inventory was 14.7 billion cubic meters which meant that 89% of repositories were full.
