Russia Accelerates South Stream Pipeline

South Stream pipeline having been built for a long time are facing with interruption because of crisis in Ukraine. However, the program aiming to realize diversified gas pipe strategy for supplying Russian gas to Europe may break through recently through mediation of Russian high-level. It is analyzed that Russia still takes advantages although Russia, Ukraine and EU have their own profits on South Stream pipeline. On one hand, Russia is supplier. On the other hand, divergence exits inside EU. Members of EU have different attitudes to Russia.
To accelerate South Stream pipeline, Russian high-level take actions frequently in recent years. Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, Dimitry Medvedev, the Prime Minister and Lavrov, the minister of foreign affairs visit Austria, Serbia and Bulgaria, three key states where South Stream pipeline will cross through in succession. During the visit to Austria of Putin at the end of June, Russia signed shareholder agreements of South Stream pipeline joint venture. The first gas is estimated to be transmitted to Austria by the end of 2016.
On July 7th, on joint press conference after meeting with Aleksandar the Prime Minister of Serbia Medvedev said,” We will sign a document in recent days in principle.” The document is treaty about the construction of South Stream pipeline in Serbia. Aleksandar claimed,” Russia has compromised. Tomorrow or several days later, technical problems will be figured out soon.
On the same day, Lavrov arrived at Bulgaria. Plamen Oresharski claimed that Bulgaria had showed great interests in South Stream Pipeline for more than one time. He said,” Bulgaria has responded to the doubt of European Commission about South Stream pipeline. I consider that we have powerful proof and European Commission will accept our explanation. It is pointed that Bulgaria can ensure its own energy supply and expand demands for employment.
South Stream pipeline began to be built in December, 2012. It is predicted that the pipeline will start to supply gas at the first quarter of 2016 and put into full operation in 2018.
